ISL Task 3

ISL task 3

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle

The shot is a long shot, showing one of the characters ‘Soloman’ and a house, possible being the place of focus in the film. The way Soloman is dressed shows that he dresses for comfort. Soloman is riding a bike, this shows he may not live here. His face is not showing, this give indication to him being unknown. The house is very large which shows that secrets could be hidden inside. The size of the house could show that the family inside is spread apart/ not close. The house does not have a fence and so seems open to people outside, such as Soloman. This shot follows the rule of thirds and in the middle is the front of the house, this shows the house to be significant in the film. Before this shot the camera cuts between Soloman and the house, this gives them a connection which is shown after Soloman arrives. Attached to Solomans bike is a cart but you can not see inside it which gives it a sense of mystery.

This shot is a mid shot, showing ‘Claire’ alone but Soloman is behind her. Soloman seems like the villain because he sneaks around the house without anyone knowing. His body language, sneaking around, shows him as a mysterious character, this is furthered when Claire drops some glass and Michael (her husband) grabs Soloman due to the couple not knowing who he is. Soloman is shown to not understand what he does, this is shown when he does not run but stands still when Michael runs towards him. In this shot Claire is stood with her hand near the knives making the scene seem dangerous however instead she picks up a jug of orange juice showing that not everything is what its seems, referring to Soloman seeming like a vilian but turns out to be a hero.

This is a mid shot, showing all the characters apart from Payton. It shows the closeness of the family and the loneliness of Soloman. This shot also shows a space between the family and Soloman. The camera moves slowly to show there is no danger or action taking place and Soloman is not a threat to the family. Before this shot Soloman scares Claire by accident and Michael drags him inside, this makes Solman seem like a villain. However after this shot we are shown that Soloman is mentally disabled and is at the house to build a fence, he works for the ‘Better Days

Society’ who help the mentally disabled get jobs.

This shot is a long shot of Soloman showing him measuring out the garden using his feet, this shot the cuts to Claire and Michael looking worried, but Soloman assures them he was ‘just kidding, I have a tape measure’. Claire timidly laughs and lets him get on with his work. Before this shot we learn Soloman would like a new bike and the little girl talks more about it, this shows a connection between these two characters. After this shot Soloman gets on with the job at hand alone and acts as though he has no disability at all, this shows Soloman living his life the best way he can.

This shot is a mid shot showing ‘Claire’ and a doctor she’s never had examine her before, before this shot she finds out this new doctor is expecting a child of his own. Claire is nevous about this new doctor and after this shot the nurse leaves the room to check on some results and the doctor asks her to do something else aswell. This shows that the doctor is prolonging her absence, and although he should not start the examination without another trained nurse in the room he begins anyway. Claire believes during this examination she is sexually abused and on her way out of the surgery she has an asthma attack.
